"Sustainability is derived from the Latin word 'sustinere'. It translates as 'tenere' - to hold, and 'sus' meaning 'up'. Nowadays it is a word use more and more often, to describe the effects we humans are having on natural resources, of which supplies are now beginning to run out.

Individually we can help by promoting reduced consumption and using renewable and recycled resources. A change in behaviour and habit is a small change by us and can make such a massive difference in the long run, which, of course, is worth it.

I am continually researching new techniques and products to apply sustainable practices to garden and landscape design. Currently I try to consider the following statements to ensure a design is built in the most environmentally responsible
way possible.

• Using timber with an FSC certificate (Forest Stewardship Council)
• Avoid using treated timber (classed as 'hazardous waste' due to the potency)
• Sourcing local companies to supply plants and materials
• Using local trades people, experts and specialists
• Returning all pallets and other hardcore packaging for re-use
• Composting all site-cleared plant matter
• Using cleared soil back into the design wherever possible
• Utilising existing mature plants and trees
• Achieve biodiversity with varied planting schemes
• Inclusion of native, indigenous species in planting schemes
• Aim to use permeable paving wherever possible
• Look into ways of improving drainage systems and reducing run-off water amounts
• Suggesting the use of green roof/ green wall schemes
• Including areas for composting bins or bokashi bins
• Source recycled, re-claimed and re-usable materials
• Look into ways of achieving rain water harvesting systems
• Include drought-tolerant planting if required
• Aim to use low-carbon lighting and include light management controls
